Daycare facility for Kolding Municipality
Extension of Børnehuset Ådalen, Valhalla unit
The extension of Børnehuset, known as the Valhalla unit, consists of 17 specially designed modules. The modules are assembled into three functional and inspiring group rooms with associated cloakrooms and toilets, as well as a forest nook, two nap rooms, a shared cloakroom and staff facilities.
The building has a distinctive and playful expression with stepped offsets, round windows and small niches that inspire play. The three group rooms, which are arranged in a row, are separated by double doors, making it possible to connect all three rooms across the building.

Project design
Inside, the building is constructed from carefully selected, healthy materials that ensure a good indoor climate with excellent acoustics and large window sections that provide strong natural light.
Externally, the building is clad in Thermowood pine. The roof is covered with roofing felt and fitted with solar panels. The building is ventilated by two central ventilation units and heated by district heating. The building is installed on screw foundations, which reduce the climate impact and make it easier to relocate the building should the need arise.
The building permit for the extension of Børnehuset Ådalen was granted before the new emission factors for building operation—the expected CO₂ footprint per kWh for electricity and heating—came into effect on 1 July 2025. If the extension’s final LCA calculation had been prepared using the new factors, it would have been only 4.3 CO₂e/m²/year.
